Strawberries, Spinach, Kale Top EWG’s 2021 ‘Dirty Dozen’ List • ChildrensHealthDefense.org

Collard and mustard greens join kale among the most pesticide-contaminated fresh produce on the Environmental Working Group’s (EWG) 2021 Dirty Dozen list. For the first time, bell peppers and hot peppers have made the list.

The Dirty Dozen and the Clean Fifteen together make up EWG’s annual Shopper’s Guide to Pesticides in Produce, which analyzes Department of Agriculture test data to identify which fresh fruits and vegetables are most and least contaminated with pesticide residues.

“Whether organic or conventionally grown, fruits and vegetables are critical components of a healthy diet,” said EWG toxicologist Thomas Galligan, Ph.D. “We urge consumers who are concerned about their pesticide intake to consider, when possible, purchasing organically grown versions of the foods on EWG’s Dirty Dozen, or conventional produce from our Clean Fifteen.”

This year, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) tests found residues of potentially harmful chemical pesticides on nearly 70% of the non-organic fresh produce sold in the U.S. Before testing fruits and vegetables, the USDA washes, scrubs and peels them, as consumers would.

Leafy greens

Until this year, kale was alone in the number three spot on the Dirty Dozen. A total of 94 different pesticides were found on leafy greens, including neonicotinoids, or neonics. One sample of mustard greens had 20 different pesticides, and some kale and collard samples had as many as 17.

On all three types of greens, the pesticide most frequently detected by the USDA was DCPA, sold under the brand name Dacthal. The Environmental Protection Agency classifies DCPA as a possible human carcinogen, and the European Union banned it in 2009.

Neonics are the fastest-growing class of insecticides, despite a decade of research making it clear that they are highly toxic to honeybees and other pollinator species. Some studies on human health also suggest that exposure to neonics may be harmful to the developing fetus and to children.

Peppers

Bell peppers and hot peppers, tested for the first time since 2012 and 2011, respectively, are also included in this year’s list at number 10. The USDA found 115 pesticides on peppers — the most, by far, on any item.

Bell peppers and hot peppers contain concerning levels of acephate and chlorpyrifos, respectively – organophosphate insecticides that can harm children’s developing brains and are banned from use on some crops in the U.S. and from all uses in the EU. In 2017, the EPA, under the Trump administration, rejected a proposed chlorpyrifos ban, allowing it to remain on the market and subsequently in foods.

Citrus

Although no citrus fruits landed on the Dirty Dozen, this year’s Shopper’s Guide highlights the concerning levels of toxic pesticides found on these fruits, not only in USDA tests but also in independent laboratory tests commissioned by EWG.

SOLVED: What Is Our TRUE Natural Diet? by Roger Haeske | rogerhaeske.com

Late this past summer, I believe I got the definitive answer as to what the natural human diet really is.

The debate rages over what is a natural diet for humans. With hundreds of different diet or nutrition books out there. From low fat to high fat and high protein. From cooked vegetarian to a ketogenic diet like the Atkin’s Diet.

And yet most people seem to believe that you have to cook your food and of course if you eat meat most people agree that you have to cook it to kill the germs.

So how can any diet requiring cooking be natural? It makes no sense since not a single wild animal will cook their food.

Did you ever see a group of lions barbecuing gazelle over a campfire and making a shish kebab?

I don’t see any reason why humans should be the only animals that were designed to eat cooked food. If so, our bodies should have had a built in oven or stove.

And not a single truly wild animal ever looks old or ever gets overweight. By wild, I mean they never eat food given to them by humans. We humans have no clue how to eat healthily. And in our attempts to be nice to the animals many of us actually poison them with our cooked foods.

So for me then, the first test if a diet is natural is if it consists of raw or live foods.

Now there are some people who don’t cook their foods but will also eat raw meat. That is another potential option.

So the question becomes is a raw vegetarian or vegan diet natural or is it a diet that includes some animal as foods as well?

The big problem it appeared for a raw vegan diet to be truly natural is “how do you get your vitamin B12?” For there are many raw foodists who become B12 deficient if they don’t supplement. I was one of those raw foodists.

In fact, in recent years even the normal B12 supplements (methylcobalamin and cyanocobalamin) I was not absorbing at all. I had no idea I was not absorbing them and I ended up becoming B12 deficient as a result. I had to take a different kind altogether (hydroxycobalamin and adenosylcobalamin) in order to get my B12 levels back up. So glad I already knew about them.

Well earlier this summer I was again conversing with DS (Divine Source) about dietary issues.

And he told me something very interesting.

He said that humans produce plenty of B12 via bacteria and fermentation in their lower intestines (this is a known fact) but the problem was that most people don’t absorb that B12 that is in their gut. The problem he said is a simple one. Most people have done so much damage to their digestive tract from a lifetime of eating cooked food, that they can no longer absorb the B12 that they should naturally be absorbing in their colon.

DS said that the worst foods in terms of damaging the digestive tract are actually meat and dairy.

He also said something very interesting. He said that the B12 in animal meat was like buying your B12 supplement at a dollar store. In other words, the B12 found in meat is of the lowest quality for humans to consume.

So basically, if you’re digestive tract is working at high capacity and really absorbing nutrients well, you will have no need to take a B12 supplement.

But on top of that he said that high quality organic “soil” is loaded with B12. And if you’re out in the wild you’re going to naturally eat some dirt with your foods. All this cleaning off of everything and being so antiseptic isn’t natural or even helpful for humans.

So if you need B12 just find yourself some good organic soil and you can eat just a little bit of that daily and that should help too.

But the ideal is to fully heal and restore your digestive tract so that it can absorb all of the nutrients you are eating as well as all of the nutrients the bacteria in your body is producing via fermentation.

Now if what DS said is true, this means that humans with a healthy digestive tract and healthy body in general can thrive on a Vegetarian or Vegan Live Food Diet because it is the actual diet we were DESIGNED to eat.

The only reason people struggle is because they’ve done so much damage to their body from eating unnatural diets. Including the damage the already inherited from the poor diets of their parents and grand parents

The Effects of a Raw Vegan Diet on Your Mental Health | Ariel Belloso

When examining the daily life of a drug addict, it’s safe to say there is a common thread; they are always on the lookout for their next “fix”. Their lives run from stimulation to stimulation, whether through smoking cigarettes, drinking alcohol, or other drugs. 

When studying the behaviour of people eating the standard American Diet, the search for relief and the need of stimulation is also a constant factor. Drinking coffee first thing in the morning? Croissants and/or bacon for breakfast? Chicken sandwich for lunch plus a protein bar for dessert? More stimulants throughout the day in the form of fizzy drinks and processed snacks. Sirloin steak and wine for dinner (also stimulants), more desserts in the form of pudding, and so it goes…

As you can see, as in the lives of drug addicts, people eating the standard western diet are also ON DRUGS ALL THE TIME. You could argue that smoking heroin is not the same as eating bread, but actually, did you know that bread contains chemical structures that closely mimic opium, especially those made of wheat? 

Furthermore, it has been shown that the digestion of grain and dairy generates opioid-like compounds that cause mental derangement when they reach the brain. 

Are we then surprised to find that, just like drug addicts who experience massive mental challenges as a result of their drug consumption, people who eat a western diet also suffer from huge mental health issues – partly resulting from their choice of food and beverages? 

People become addicted to certain foods, such as grain products and meats among others, largely due to their stimulating effects. Stimulation is a forced draught upon the energies of the body, if it is long continued or often repeated, exhaustion is the result. 

Stimulation and irritation are identical phenomena. The only difference between the stimulation of small doses and the irritation of large doses is that of degree, not kind.

If the causes of intoxication/irritation as a consequence of living the wrong lifestyle remain in force and the body can’t cope with it, the body initiates a responsive crisis called inflammation, for it involves pain; which could lead to ulcers and cancers, as well as other serious diseases. 

By contrast, raw fruit and vegetables DO NOT stimulate, which explains why so many people experience huge health benefits when adopting raw, or mostly raw, plant based diets  – including overcoming many mental health challenges. 

Scientific studies done on raw vegan diets are scarce because this diet is still relatively new to the mainstream, but we do have strong scientific evidence about the benefits of eating raw on our mental health, so much so, that these studies have made top headline on many news outlets around the world.

Which begs the question, if the mounting scientific evidence of eating raw foods and its positive effect on our mental wellbeing is so overwhelming, why have none of these studies made it onto the Nutrition Facts.org website? Could it be because it undermines the effectiveness of cooked food diets over raw vegan diets, something that we have known in Natural Hygiene to be true for a long time? I don’t know, but it feels rather suspicious.

My personal experience of overcoming mental health issues after changing my diet to raw foods has been overwhelmingly positive. At the turn of the millennium I achieved one of my childhood dreams: becoming one of the biggest DJs in the world, and not only a DJ, I was a successful electronic music producer too, selling hundreds of thousands of records; still, I suffered from long term chronic depression. 

It was difficult to understand why I felt down since nothing in my life appeared to be wrong at that point. Back in the 1990s, I had a successful career in music and my family was perfectly healthy. I had not studied nor done any health research at that point, but I instinctively knew that something “chemical” was causing my depression..

Chemical indeed; after transitioning my diet to raw foods in 2008, my chronic depression disappeared WITHIN DAYS! I still remember this time period as if it was yesterday; it was one the most wonderful moments I have ever experienced. How can such a straightforward change of diet make such a huge impact on one’s emotional being, without the need for medication or therapy? TRULY AMAZING!

Have you heard the expression ‘when you find yourself in a hole, the first thing to do is stop digging’? In the same way drug addicts cannot overcome their mental health challenges without first quitting the substances they are addicted to; I believe people also should look at considerably improving their diet in order to best deal with their mental health issues. 

If you keep stuffing yourself with cooked, processed, and refined foods, no psychologist, psychiatrist, therapist, pill, or doctor will be able to help, because food is all too often the root cause of this disease.

My own health transformation has led me to create many books and programs in the hope I can guide others to overcome depression forever and feel at their best!

Hurdles T. Colin Campbell Overcame To Make His Research Available To The Public – The Real Truth About Health Conference

For decades T. Colin Campbell, Ph.D. has been at the forefront of nutrition education and research. Dr. Campbell’s expertise and scientific interests encompass relationships between diet and disease, particularly the causation of cancer. His legacy, the China Project, is one of the most comprehensive studies of health and nutrition ever conducted. The New York Times has recognized the study as the “Grand Prix of epidemiology.”

Dr. Campbell is the coauthor of the bestselling book The China Study: Startling Implications for Diet, Weight Loss, and Long-term Health, and author of the New York Times bestseller Whole, and The Low-Carb Fraud. He is featured in several documentaries including the blockbuster Forks Over Knives, Eating You Alive, Food Matters, Plant Pure Nation and others. He is the founder of the T. Colin Campbell Center for Nutrition Studies and the online Plant-Based Nutrition Certificate in partnership with eCornell.

Dr. Campbell has conducted original research both in laboratory experiments and in large-scale human studies; received over 70 grant-years of peer-reviewed research funding (mostly with NIH), served on grant review panels of multiple funding agencies, actively participated in the development of national and international nutrition policy, authored over 300 research papers and given hundreds of lectures around the world.

He was trained at Cornell University (M.S., Ph.D.) and MIT (Research Associate) in nutrition, biochemistry, and toxicology. Dr. Campbell spent 10 years on the faculty of Virginia Tech’s Department of Biochemistry and Nutrition before returning to Cornell in 1975 where he presently holds his Endowed Chair as the Jacob Gould Schurman Professor Emeritus of Nutritional Biochemistry in the Division of Nutritional Sciences.
