Joseph Alexander — Plant-Strong by Engine 2

I found the Engine 2 Seven-Day Rescue Diet after over 40 years of trying seemingly endless ways to lose weight, including other whole-food, plant-based approaches.

After watching Forks Over Knives some years earlier and reviewing the science, I knew that a plant-based diet was the solution to finding my way to a healthy body.

But decades of dieting had me convinced that losing body fat had to be a painful process of deprivation in which constant hunger must be endured if you wanted to be thinner.

I was making plant-based eating much harder than it needed to be, and impossible to stick to.

When I came across the Engine 2 Seven-Day Rescue Diet, I had all but given up after over 40 years of fighting my weight.  I reasoned that I had tried it all and would never find success.

My highest recorded weight was 454 pounds (206kg). But I continued to gain weight and to get sicker.

I had type 2 diabetes that was out of control—my typical morning glucose readings were around 450mg/dL and my hemoglobin A1C was 9.7%.

I was having regular, almost monthly, systemic infections that required antibiotics.

There were plenty of good reasons to be highly motivated, but I just could not find my way.

On New Year’s Day, 2017, I watched Forks Over Knives again, and thought that maybe if I softened my approach a bit, I could at least eat much more healthfully than I had been.

Rip Esselstyn had just published The Engine 2 Seven-Day Rescue Diet, and I found my way into the small-at-the-time Facebook group that was offering support to folks who wanted to try it.

I learned about what Rip was proposing—eat potatoes, whole grains and fruit—and I thought for sure that I would gain weight and my diabetes would worsen.

But, I said to myself, I clearly don’t know what I’m doing, and my diet couldn’t be much worse than it is now.

I decided that for seven days, I could follow the guidelines and see where it got me.

I decided to put my trust in the Esselstyns.

I decided to go all in, following the plan one-hundred percent, one-hundred percent of the time.

And after I started and began to see results, I decided I would never, ever, give back one single inch of the ground I was gaining for myself.

Within a single day of starting, I felt better than I had in years.
